Version Control for the Kitchen

I’ve spent many years managing engineering teams and architecting software that organizes massive amounts of content. Yet, when I closed my laptop at the end of the day, I was still relying on messy bookmarks, scribbled index cards, and fragmented memory to manage one of the most important parts of daily life: dinner.

I wanted a better way to track how my family’s favorite meals evolve over time. That’s why I built Tweak To Taste.

What is Tweak To Taste?

At its core, Tweak To Taste is a modern web application for finding, storing, and organizing recipes. But the real magic lies in how it handles modifications.

Whenever my wife or I find a great recipe online, we rarely follow it exactly. We’ll swap out an ingredient we don’t have, adjust the spice levels, or completely change the main protein. In the software engineering world, when you want to take an existing project and modify it to suit your needs, you “fork” it. I realized this exact Git-style branching model is perfectly suited for the kitchen.

When you find a recipe on Tweak To Taste, you don’t just save it—you can fork it. Did you take a classic shrimp salad and swap in chicken? You’ve just created a branch. Over time, the platform builds a visual, public family tree (using PostgreSQL’s ltree extension under the hood) showing exactly how a root recipe has been adapted, remixed, and passed around the community.

Features

It’s built with Next.js, Supabase, and a fully relational database to keep the lineage intact and highly performant.

  • Recipe Branching: Seamlessly fork any public recipe to create your own personalized version without losing the connection to the original author’s dish.
  • Visual Lineage Graphs: Explore the history of a dish. Trace a highly customized vegan chili all the way back to its traditional root recipe.
  • Dynamic Customization: Highly flexible ingredient and measurement inputs that let you modify a recipe down to the exact pinch or dash.
  • Diff Views: Instantly compare your forked recipe with the original to see exactly what you changed (the ultimate culinary “diff”).

The Philosophy

Recipes shouldn’t be static, unchangeable documents. They are living things that adapt to the people cooking them. A recipe changes because someone develops an allergy, because a specific ingredient isn’t available at the local grocery store, or simply because you want a milder flavor profile.

The goal of Tweak To Taste is to celebrate that evolution. Instead of hiding your modifications in the margins of a cookbook, those tweaks become part of a shared, public history. It honors the original creator while encouraging endless culinary iteration.
